Adsence is a service run by google that places ads on websites. If you sign up for adsense you agree to show ads from google and you recieve a fee each time someone clicks on the ads. Adsense is the way google displays ads for their adword program. To understand adsense you must first underdtand adword.
Adword is program where advertisers can submit their ads to google. They submit a headline and some text and then agree on amount to pay to display their ad on the google network. This is were your site comes in, when you display adsense on your site you are basically become part of google advertising network, you display the ad the advertiser submited and google gives you a cut of the money they paid.
Now before you rush of and start pasting adsense all over your site it not as easy as it sounds. Before you start you have to make sure your site is google friendly and that the pages you will have adsense on are not design around the ads. You see google is very careful were they display their ads, they are looking for value for their adword customers. So its not worth including adsense on a site that just loads of links or pictures. They are look for information rich sites with a propose and that have unique contents.
